The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that the dates for its 2027 primary elections remain unchanged, dismissing false reports circulating on social media. The party's national spokesperson issued a statement on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, clarifying the schedule.
APC Primary Election Schedule
The APC announced the following dates for its primaries: House of Representatives on Friday, May 15, 2026; Senate on Monday, May 18, 2026; State House of Assembly on Wednesday, May 20, 2026; Governorship on Thursday, May 21, 2026; and Presidential on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The party emphasized that these dates are final.
Opposition Realignments
As the 2027 elections approach, opposition figures are repositioning. Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi are key players. Initially, they agreed to unite under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but Obi and Kwankwaso later moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing litigation issues with the ADC. Atiku and Amaechi remain in the ADC, leaving the opposition's candidate uncertain.
Tinubu's Strategy
President Bola Tinubu is focusing on Kano, Lagos, and Rivers states to secure a majority. These states are major vote banks, and the APC hopes to leverage recent defections and Tinubu's performance. Political analyst Suleiman Gimba described them as "vote multipliers" that can decisively shape presidential outcomes.
The APC has also waived the screening requirement for President Tinubu, deeming him already screened. Party spokesman Felix Morka announced this after the NWC's 188th meeting.
Despite opposition challenges, APC national chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda expressed confidence in victory, dismissing the ADC coalition's chances and praising Tinubu's administration.
