The All Progressives Congress (APC) has brushed aside recent criticisms from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), labeling them as superficial. The ruling party asserts that a wave of high-profile defections to its ranks is a clearer indicator of its expanding influence and national acceptance.
APC Chairman Addresses Party's NEC Meeting
Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the APC, made this declaration during the party's 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) gathering. The meeting was convened at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on 19 December 2025.
Yilwatda emphasized that the APC's primary focus is on consolidating its internal framework and boosting its organizational capacity in preparation for future elections. "Our objective remains to strengthen and galvanise party structures at all levels," he stated. "We are enhancing our structural and strategic preparedness ahead of the next election cycle."
Defections as Proof of Momentum
The APC leader directly linked the party's current trajectory to the recent political realignments across the country. He argued that the opposition's discomfort stems from the APC's deliberate efforts to build a broad-based, progressive political entity.
"We are not deterred by the few shallow criticisms of the opposition," Yilwatda said. "They have become increasingly uncomfortable with our deliberate and principled effort to build a truly pan-Nigerian political party."
Governors Swell APC Ranks
Yilwatda pointed to specific defections as tangible evidence of the APC's appeal. He named several governors who have recently joined the ruling party's fold:
- Peter Mbah of Enugu State
- Douye Diri of Bayelsa State
- Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State
- Agbu Kefas of Taraba State
He characterized these moves as a significant endorsement, stating, "Everybody wants to be a member of the APC." According to him, these political actors see the APC as the primary vehicle for stability and maintaining national relevance in the coming political contests.
The APC's stance signals a confident posture heading into the next electoral cycle, framing internal consolidation and external expansion as key pillars of its strategy, while dismissing opposing voices as inconsequential to its growth.
