The Abia state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially dismissed viral social media reports alleging the disqualification of governorship aspirant Eric Opah from the party's primary election. The party described the claims as entirely false and urged the public to disregard them.
Party Clarifies Position
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, and signed by party spokesperson Uche Aguoru, the APC emphasized that Opah remains a duly registered and qualified member. The statement clarified that no official communication from the party's national leadership has disqualified Opah or questioned his membership status.
“Opah remains a duly registered and qualified member of the All Progressives Congress and has not been disqualified by the party from contesting the forthcoming governorship primary election,” the statement read.
Membership Allegations Baseless
The APC also addressed allegations that Opah's membership was not recorded in the party's online database, labeling such claims as speculation intended to cause confusion and division. The party stressed that its membership process accommodates various administrative procedures and that no aspirant can be disqualified based on unverified social media gossip.
“The insinuation that his membership was not captured in the party’s online database is nothing but speculation designed to create confusion, sow division within the party, and mislead the public,” the statement added.
Commitment to Transparency
The Abia APC reaffirmed its dedication to conducting a transparent, credible, and inclusive primary election scheduled for Thursday, May 21. The party urged supporters and the general public to rely only on official communications from appropriate party organs.
“We therefore urge party faithful, supporters, and the general public to disregard the fake report in its entirety and await only official communications from the appropriate organs of the party,” the statement concluded.
The party reiterated its commitment to producing a candidate acceptable to the majority of its members through a fair electoral process.
