The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a significant milestone in its ongoing membership revalidation exercise, with more than two million Nigerians already digitally registered and verified. This announcement was made less than a week after the nationwide drive commenced.
Rapid Progress in Digital Membership Drive
Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the APC, disclosed the figures on Monday, January 12, 2026, in Abuja. He spoke during a press briefing that followed a meeting of the party's National Working Committee (NWC) with state coordinators managing the registration process.
The meeting was jointly presided over by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and the Chairman of the APC State Chairmen Forum, Mr. Cornelius Ojelabi. Various other party leaders from across Nigeria were also in attendance.
Basiru emphasized that data collection is crucial for the party's operational effectiveness, particularly for mobilising supporters, organising activities, and conducting consultations. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that several states are yet to begin full-scale registration.
Inclusive Process and Ambitious Targets
"As of today, just one week into the exercise, we have over two million Nigerians digitally verified, complete with their names and voter identification numbers," Basiru stated. He added, "By next week, we expect the figure to rise to between eight and nine million members, by the grace of God."
The digital registration process captures detailed demographic information, including gender, occupation, and age. Data integrity is maintained by linking each record to the member's phone number and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) number.
Addressing potential challenges in areas with security concerns or poor network coverage, the National Secretary assured that manual registration would be conducted where necessary. Data from such exercises will be uploaded once internet access is available.
"No APC member will be excluded due to insecurity or poor network access. We have deployed multiple registration personnel across wards nationwide to ensure inclusiveness," he said.
Dismissing Factional Claims and Looking Ahead
Responding to allegations of exclusion from certain internal party groups, Basiru firmly dismissed the claims. He stressed that the registration is open to all members in line with the directive of the party's leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
"No faction is being legitimised or disallowed. Registration is open to everyone who meets the requirements. Contestation comes later," he clarified.
While the National Secretary declined to provide a state-by-state breakdown, citing internal party data, he reaffirmed the APC's status as a pan-Nigerian party with a strong presence in all regions.
Basiru concluded by commending state-level stakeholders for their dedication of time, energy, and resources to the exercise's success. He noted that challenges identified during the process are already being addressed to ensure smoother operations going forward.
