The Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imeko-Afon Local Council of Ogun State has publicly declared its support for the governorship aspiration of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi. During a protest at the party secretariat, the youths also voiced strong opposition against what they described as attempts to impose a candidate for the State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections.
Demands for Transparent Primaries
The protesting members insisted that any aspirant seeking to represent the constituency must emerge through a credible and transparent primary election. They expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged marginalisation of youths in the distribution of political offices within the local government, accusing party leaders of compromising party ideology.
Resistance Against Extended Tenure
The group highlighted that the state House of Assembly seat has been occupied by Jemili Akingbade for approximately 12 years. They warned that any move to grant him another term would be met with strong resistance. In a communiqué jointly signed by 10 members, including Ibrahim Muyheed, Fayomi Yunus, Dende Atanda, Yusuf Toheeb, Ayoola Monsurat, Afolabi Sukurat, Ogunbiyi Nafisat, Waliu Fadipe, Ajaba Morufat, and Sukurat Saheed, the protesters called for fairness, equity, and justice in the candidate selection process.
Upholding Democratic Principles
Speaking during the protest, Yunus, popularly known as ‘Gateway,’ stated that the agitation was driven by a collective desire to uphold democratic principles within the party. While reaffirming the group’s support for Adeola, he warned that any attempt by party leaders to impose a candidate could have adverse consequences for the party in the area.
Party Chairman's Response
In response, the APC Chairman in Imeko-Afon LGA, Abdulrahman Adebolu, called for calm and assured members that the party operates within established constitutional procedures. He emphasized that the party leadership is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent process for all aspirants.
