The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Abia State will emerge from the Abia Central Senatorial District, should the party win the poll. The decision was made public on Thursday, April 30, by the party's Publicity Secretary in Abia State, Mr. Uche Aguoru, through a press statement titled “2027 General Elections: APC Zones Governorship To Abia Central Senatorial District.”
Details of the Zoning Decision
According to the statement, the next governor of Abia State from May 29, 2027, will hail from the central district if the APC candidate emerges victorious. The decision is based on the principles of equity, justice, and fair play, aligning with the party's commitment to balanced representation across the three senatorial zones. Aguoru recalled that since the return of democracy in 1999, Abia State has operated on an understanding of power rotation among the zones to foster unity and inclusiveness.
Composition of Abia Central
Abia Central Senatorial District comprises six local government areas: Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ikwuano, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, and Osisioma Ngwa. The statement noted that the party's chairman hails from Abia North, while Abia South produced the immediate past governor. Therefore, it is just and equitable for Abia Central to produce the next governor on the APC platform.
Appeal for Support
Aguoru urged all aspirants and stakeholders from other zones to respect the party's decision in the spirit of sportsmanship and work together to secure victory for the party. He emphasized that the notice should guide party members and intending governorship aspirants in the purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
Historical Context
The three past governors of Abia State—Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator Theodore Orji, and Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu—hailed from Abia North, Abia Central, and Abia South, respectively. This rotation pattern supports the current zoning decision.
Reactions
Chief Henry Ikoh, an APC gubernatorial aspirant from Abia Central, has already announced his intention to contest in the 2027 election. Reacting to the zoning decision, Ikoh lauded the party's move, describing it as based on equity, justice, and fairness.
