Atiku Emerges ADC Presidential Candidate for 2027 Election

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections. The final collation of votes was announced at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja late Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

Atiku's Acceptance Speech as ADC Candidate

In his acceptance speech, Atiku expressed gratitude to party members for the privilege of leading the ADC into the next elections. He emphasized that democracy remains alive within the ADC, contrasting it with what he described as the oppressive tendencies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Condemnation of Government Actions

Atiku criticized the APC government for allegedly engineering leadership crises in opposition parties, harassing opposition figures, and detaining former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai despite court orders granting him bail. He called for an end to such cruelty and warned against further interference in the ADC's affairs.

Unity and Urgency

He urged fellow aspirants to unite, stating that no one was defeated and that the party must work together to rescue the country from what he termed the destructive grip of a corrupt and incompetent APC government.

Key Priorities Under an ADC Government

Security

Atiku pledged to strengthen the armed forces and police through massive recruitment, modern equipment, improved welfare, and effective leadership. He emphasized the need for accountability and intelligence sharing among security agencies.

Education

He promised free and compulsory primary and secondary education, investment in leadership and entrepreneurial skills, and a holistic revival of the educational system with proper infrastructure and teacher welfare.

Economy

Atiku criticized the APC's economic management, citing rising poverty and debt. He committed to addressing the energy crisis, removing bottlenecks to attract investments, and ensuring accountability in government spending.

Healthcare

He highlighted the neglect of healthcare, noting that the Federal Ministry of Health received only 30 million naira for capital expenditure. Atiku pledged massive investment in primary healthcare and the establishment of world-class medical facilities.

Call for Unity

Atiku appealed to aggrieved members and fellow aspirants, including Chief Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, to join him in the fight to save democracy. He concluded by saying, 'There are no winners and no losers. Our people look up to us for leadership.'
