Desmond Elliot, the actor-turned-politician, has rejected the results of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Surulere 1 constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly. He alleged that his supporters faced intimidation at the polling venue.
Primary Election Details
The primary took place on May 20 at the Paddington mini stadium on Western Avenue. His main opponent, Bakarat Bakare, who was backed by state and federal government officials, was declared the winner.
Elliot's Allegations
Speaking at the venue, Elliot stated that he made several attempts to get electoral officers to allow his supporters access to the polling area, but his requests were ignored. He said, "And of course, in all zones, they’ve been intimidating and stopping us. I want to officially announce my withdrawal from this particular race. This is my ward. If you go outside, those are my people outside."
He further alleged that many of his supporters were barred from entering the polling venue despite repeated appeals to officials overseeing the process. "They’ve not been allowed," Elliot stated shortly before announcing his withdrawal.
Reactions at the Venue
Videos shared online show some party members chanting "Ole, thief" at him as he left the venue of the primary.
Elliot's Political Background
Elliot was first elected in 2015 under the APC and secured re-election in 2019 and 2023. He was seeking a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
