Gabriel Omodara, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a respected elder in Ekiti State, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the age of 93. Governor Oyebanji Mourns the Loss of a Progressive Icon

Governor Oyebanji, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, expressed profound grief over Omodara's passing. He noted that the death represents a significant blow to the APC, the progressive movement in Ekiti, and particularly to the people of Ado Ekiti. The governor recalled that during a recent meeting with the late elder statesman, Omodara had shown no signs of deteriorating health and remained passionately committed to the state's future.

“Pa Omodara was one of the most dedicated leaders of the party, who worked tirelessly with other stakeholders to build a strong and enduring political structure for the APC in the state,” Oyebanji said. He added, “Pa Omodara lived a fulfilled life, served selflessly, and left behind a legacy of honour, integrity, and enduring impact.”

Ekiti Council of Elders Pays Tribute to a Stabilising Force

Niyi Ajibulu, General Secretary of the Ekiti Council of Elders, also paid tribute to Omodara, describing him as a pillar within the council and a figure who seamlessly blended Christian faith with Yoruba tradition. Ajibulu noted that Omodara was the face of the council's workshop “Aging Grace” and was widely regarded as a stabilising influence.

“Prince Omodara (also fondly known as Worowo) was the face of the Council for the workshop 'Aging Grace'. A notable stabilising personnel in the Council. Always blending the Christian religion with the Yoruba tradition in prayers and activities,” Ajibulu said.

Ajibulu further described Omodara as a great, respected community and political leader in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, and Nigeria. “He was a well-known grassroots mobiliser in the region, recognised for his longstanding political and community engagement. We will miss him greatly,” he added.

A Legacy of Service and Mentorship

Gabriel Omodara, popularly known as “Baba QC,” served as chairman of the defunct Ekiti Central Local Government, which at the time covered Ado and Ifelodun/Ifaki Local Government Areas. He was a member of the Ekiti Council of Elders and devoted his later years to mentoring younger leaders and serving his community. His decades of grassroots engagement made him a recognisable and trusted figure across the region.

According to The Punch and The Eagle Online, Omodara's death has left a void in the political landscape of Ekiti State. Governor Oyebanji highlighted Omodara's commitment to mentoring future generations, stating that his guidance would be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Impact on Ekiti Politics and the APC

Omodara's passing comes at a time when the APC in Ekiti is navigating political dynamics ahead of future elections. His experience and network were considered invaluable for party cohesion and grassroots mobilisation. The Ekiti Council of Elders, which includes Omodara, plays a key role in advising the government and mediating conflicts. His absence may affect the council's activities, particularly the “Aging Grace” workshop he championed.

Governor Oyebanji has assured the family and the party of the government's support during this period of mourning. The APC in Ekiti is expected to organise a memorial event to honour Omodara's contributions to the state and the nation.
