Former adult film star Deyci Alejandra Omana Ortiz, known professionally as Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia, representing the left-wing Historic Pact party. The 33-year-old former journalist entered the adult industry in 2017 and left it two years later to pursue a political career.
Election Victory and Platform
Ortiz was elected in March in the Norte de Santander region. She secured her seat by being 23rd on the Historic Pact's candidate list, which is Colombia's largest senate bloc with 25 seats. Her campaign focused on guaranteeing social security rights for adult-content creators, arguing that legal protections are needed to prevent exploitation by companies and agencies.
Advocacy for Adult Industry Workers
In a campaign video, Ortiz stated: “These women have been unprotected by the state because, due to misinformation, prejudice and double standards, no one has declared to regulate it.” She has defended her candidacy against critics who question former adult stars holding office, asking: “Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?” She cited Ilona Staller, a former porn star who became an Italian lawmaker in the 1970s.
Broader Political Goals
Ortiz emphasized that her experience in the adult industry gave her insight into inequality, the struggle for freedom, and the popular economy—arguments she promises to bring into legislative debate. She also advocates for quality mental health services and measures to prevent sexual abuse. Following her election, she said: “I feel embraced by my people.” She added: “There is a political transformation underway that still has a long way to go, but the important thing is that it has already begun in some way.”
