Fayose Predicts Victory for Oyebanji in Ekiti Election

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, cast his vote on Saturday in the ongoing governorship election at Polling Unit 1 in Afao-Ekiti, within Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area. Speaking to reporters after voting, Mr. Fayose, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), predicted a decisive victory for the incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who is seeking re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.

Fayose's Endorsement of Oyebanji

“(Biodun) Oyebanji has already won the election,” declared Mr. Fayose, who governed Ekiti State from 2003 to 2006 and later from 2014 to 2018 under the PDP banner. The former governor argued that the current political climate and the demeanor of Ekiti residents strongly indicate support for Oyebanji. “If you look at the state of things in the state and the body language of the people, I am predicting an overwhelming victory for him,” he stated.

Breaking Ranks with PDP

Mr. Fayose’s endorsement is notable because he remains a chieftain of the PDP, whose candidate in this election is Wole Oluyede. By openly supporting the APC candidate, Fayose has broken with his party's traditional stance. This move underscores the shifting political alliances in Ekiti State, where Oyebanji is widely expected to secure a second term.

Election Day Observations

The election, which began early Saturday, has seen voters turning out across the state. Reports of minor glitches at some polling units have not dampened the overall atmosphere. Governor Oyebanji himself urged patience among voters, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful electoral process. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the public of transparent and credible polls.

Fayose's prediction adds weight to the growing consensus that Oyebanji will retain his position, despite the PDP's efforts to unseat him. The former governor's influence in Ekiti politics remains significant, and his break from party lines could sway undecided voters.
