Major Political Shift as Former Governor Idris Wada Joins APC
In a significant development reshaping the political landscape of Kogi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Governor Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The high-profile defection ceremony, which took place in Odu, Dekina Local Government Area, attracted the presence of the nation's top political figures, signaling the event's immense importance.
Among the dignitaries who graced the occasion were Vice President Kashim Shettima, the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. The convergence of such prominent leaders underscored the strategic value of Wada's move to the APC.
Ohere Applauds Defection, Sets Sights on Senate Return
Former Senator Abubakar Sadiku Ohere warmly welcomed Wada and other defectors, describing their decision as a visionary step that would foster greater unity, stability, and development in Kogi State. Ohere emphasized that such political realignments serve to strengthen the APC and create new avenues for collaborative governance that ultimately benefit the citizens.
Speaking to journalists, Ohere seized the opportunity to outline his achievements during his previous term in the Senate, making a strong case for his comeback bid in 2027. He highlighted his role as the Chairman of the Committee on Local Content and his membership in other crucial committees, including Works and Health.
His legislative focus included sponsoring motions aimed at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company and supporting policies to expand local participation in the oil and gas sector. These efforts, he stated, were geared towards promoting industrialization, job creation, and enhancing transparency in governance.
A Wave of Defections and Ohere's Proven Track Record
The event was not just about Wada; it marked a larger movement into the APC. Other notable figures who crossed over included Hon. Sam Abenemi, the former Deputy Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Hon. Emmanuel Omebije, former Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, and Hon. Beyond his legislative record, Ohere's prospects are bolstered by his extensive experience in the Kogi State Cabinet. As the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, he was instrumental in resolving longstanding traditional disputes and empowering royal institutions. During his tenure as Commissioner for Works, he supervised critical infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and drainage systems, and contributed to the establishment of the Reference Hospital in Okene and developments at the Confluence University of Science and Technology in Osara.
At the community level, Ohere championed various empowerment initiatives, providing:
