Kano PDP Endorses Jonathan as Consensus Presidential Candidate for 2027
Kano PDP Backs Jonathan for 2027 Presidency

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has officially endorsed the adoption of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the party's consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Background of the Endorsement

This endorsement follows the recent ratification by the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the PDP, which confirmed Jonathan as the party's sole presidential candidate for the 2027 poll. The state chairman, Hon. Yusuf Ado Kibiya, announced the position during a press conference held on Monday in Kano.

Party Chairman's Statement

Kibiya explained that after a careful review of the National Executive Committee's (NEC) decision regarding Jonathan's candidacy, the Kano chapter deemed it necessary to adopt the former president as their candidate. He emphasized that this decision is in full compliance with the party's constitutional processes.

"Kano PDP has reviewed the national executive's decision regarding the presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan," Kibiya stated. He noted that the party acknowledges the procedures that culminated in the decision and stressed that the party's internal mechanisms must be upheld at all levels.

Alignment with Party Objectives

The chairman affirmed that the Kano chapter will continue to align itself with the broader objectives of the PDP while engaging constructively with stakeholders to strengthen the party ahead of future political contests. "We acknowledge and respect the processes that led to this decision and affirm our support for their right to determine the party's national trajectory, within the framework of our constitution and legal guidelines," Kibiya said.

He added, "Our regional chapter remains aligned with the party's broad objectives and will engage in constructive dialogue to advance PDP's mission across Kano and Nigeria."

Call for Unity

Kibiya used the occasion to call for unity among party members, urging them to remain disciplined and committed to the collective aspirations of the PDP. He assured supporters that despite recent political realignments and defections in some quarters, the PDP in Kano remains united and determined to provide credible leadership and democratic alternatives for Nigerians.

The chairman further reiterated the party's commitment to democratic values, accountability, and public service, expressing confidence that the PDP would continue to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria's political future.

Loyalty Amid Defections

Notably, the leadership and hundreds of PDP loyalists in Kano had refused to defect along with former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the wave of political realignments in April. This steadfastness underscores the party's resilience in the state.
