Chief (Dr.) David Sabo Kente, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Taraba State, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election. He made the announcement on Wednesday in Wukari Local Government Area, addressing supporters, political associates, and residents. Kente cited what he described as poor governance and a lack of meaningful development under the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas as the primary reasons for his decision.
Kente stated that growing dissatisfaction with the current administration has led to widespread calls for him to enter the race in order to “rescue the state from total collapse.” He noted that the decision followed sustained pressure from political stakeholders, community leaders, and supporters across all 16 local government areas of the state. According to Kente, many Tarabans had supported Governor Kefas in the 2023 election with high expectations that his administration would deliver democratic dividends and accelerate development. However, he alleged that the administration has failed to meet public expectations despite the substantial resources available to the state.
Mobilisation for Candidacy
Kente disclosed that stakeholders recently held a meeting in Wukari, where leaders resolved to mobilise resources to obtain nomination forms for his candidacy ahead of the 2027 elections. After extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the state, Kente said he accepted the calls to contest the governorship election. He reiterated his support for the principle of zoning in Taraba’s political arrangement, stating that if elected, he would serve only one term of four years before power returns to either the Northern or Central Senatorial District.
Criticism of Governor Kefas
Kente further criticised recent appointments made by Governor Kefas, alleging that some appointments involving his supporters were politically motivated and aimed at influencing future primary elections. He called on residents and supporters to remain vigilant and support what he described as a collective mission to reposition Taraba State. Kente’s declaration is expected to intensify political activities in the state as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gain momentum.
Kente, a businessman and politician, emphasized that the decision to contest was not personal but a response to the urgent need for change. He urged all Tarabans to unite behind a vision of progress and accountability. The APC chieftain’s entry into the race signals a potentially competitive contest ahead of the 2027 elections, with observers closely watching how the political landscape evolves.
