Kano, Kano state - As the 2027 general elections draw closer, a fresh political twist has emerged with allegations that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is covertly working to ensure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election. This claim was made by Sunusi Tofa, the director-general of media and publicity at the Kano Government House, during an appearance on Arise Television on Wednesday, May 20.
Tofa asserted that recent political maneuvers and strategic engagements across the country indicate a subtle cooperation between some opposition figures and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, certain political calculations attributed to Kwankwaso ultimately appear to favor President Tinubu's second-term ambition. He stated that many of the ongoing political activities will eventually benefit Tinubu.
The allegation comes amid Kwankwaso's recent political realignment. In early May, the former presidential candidate announced his switch from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This move raised hopes for a stronger opposition front, potentially leading to a joint ticket with former Anambra Governor Peter Obi to challenge Tinubu. Kwankwaso, who finished fourth in the 2023 presidential race, and Obi command significant grassroots followings through the Kwankwasiya and Obidient movements, respectively.
Kwankwaso and Obi Reshape 2027 Politics
Supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso believe their alliance will bring greater focus to the opposition, despite concerns of fragmentation. Kwankwaso wields considerable influence in the north, while Obi is hugely popular among young voters across the south. The political realignment has ignited fresh dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Efforts to obtain reactions from Kwankwaso were unsuccessful as of the time of this report. However, the former governor had previously raised alarm over what he described as an attempt by Lagos to colonize Kano and the north. He also accused President Tinubu of sidelining Kano in the sharing of rice palliatives, alleging that the supplies meant for the people were distributed to APC stalwarts.
Background and Reactions
The allegation by Tofa has added a new layer of complexity to the political landscape. While anti-government actors had hoped that Kwankwaso's party switch would strengthen the opposition, Tofa's comments suggest otherwise. The Kano official emphasized that strategic engagements taking place ahead of 2027 will eventually favor President Tinubu.
This development has sparked discussions among political analysts and the public, with many questioning the true intentions behind Kwankwaso's political moves. As the 2027 elections approach, the dynamics between opposition leaders and the ruling party continue to evolve.
