Akintade AbdulMutalib Shittu, a former Chairman of the Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KwGIS) and ex-Special Assistant to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Offa/Oyun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at Offa Grammar School, Offa, over the weekend, Shittu expressed confidence that Nigerians would re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC candidates in the 2027 general elections. He asserted that his background in governance, particularly his role as a former aide to the governor, has equipped him with the necessary experience and understanding to deliver effective representation at the National Assembly.
“I am not new to lawmaking. I have been part of processes that produced impactful legislations in Kwara State. I understand what it takes to navigate the system effectively,” Shittu stated. He highlighted his contributions to the establishment of KwGIS and policies on urban planning and land use as evidence of his capability.
Shittu emphasized that representation goes beyond merely occupying a seat, calling for strategic engagement and active lobbying to attract development projects to constituents. “You don’t go to the National Assembly to sit idly. You must engage strategically and ensure your constituency benefits from available opportunities,” he said.
He pledged to prioritize the needs of the people across Offa, Oyun, and Ifelodun local government areas, promising inclusive and equitable development that addresses local challenges and improves livelihoods.
On the performance of the APC, Shittu commended the state government under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, particularly improvements in salary payments and social investment programmes. He noted that initiatives like the State Social Investment Programme (KWASSIP), including Owo Arugbo and Owo Isowo, have strengthened support for vulnerable groups and small business owners.
Shittu also expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, attributing increased federal allocations to states and ongoing economic reforms to the president’s policies. “The ingenuity of the president has led to improved federal allocations, enabling states to meet obligations like salary payments. With initiatives like NELFUND and other credit facilities, there is clear evidence of economic reform,” he said.
He maintained that the APC remains well-positioned for victory in 2027, citing growing support and recent political alignments across the country.
Party stakeholders at the event called for unity within the APC, urging aspirants and members to remain committed to party discipline. Kasali Yusuf from Ifelodun Local Government described Shittu as a loyal party member with the character needed for effective representation, stressing that party members would rally behind whoever emerges as the APC candidate.
