Kwara South Monarchs Back Igbomina for 2027 Senate Seat
Kwara South Monarchs Endorse Igbomina for 2027 Senate

Traditional rulers and stakeholders in Kwara South Senatorial District have added their voices to the call for the Igbomina bloc to produce the district's next senator, emphasizing the need to uphold the long-standing rotational arrangement among the constituent blocs. The position was declared on Monday by the Chairman of the Igbomina Traditional Rulers Forum and Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya, following a meeting of traditional rulers held at his palace in Ajase-Ipo.

Appeal to Political Leaders

Speaking on behalf of the Igbomina bloc, which comprises Ifelodun, Isin and Irepodun Local Government Areas, the monarch appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other political stakeholders to support the continuation of the district's informal zoning formula. According to him, the rotational arrangement involving the Igbomina, Ekiti and Ibolo blocs has over the years fostered peace, political stability and unity across the district.

Commendation for Development Efforts

The monarchs also commended the President and the governor for what they described as their commitment to national and state development, pledging continued support for their administrations. “As a people and as an institution, we appreciate the efforts of President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq for their contributions to national and state development. We urge them to continue working in the interest of Nigerians and Kwarans,” Oba Yahaya said.

Historical Representation Records

He noted that available political records since the return to democratic governance in 1999 showed that the Ekiti bloc produced former Senator Simeon Ajibola, who represented the district for about 11 years. The Ibolo bloc, he added, produced former Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, who served a four-year term, and the incumbent senator, Lola Ashiru, who would have completed two terms by 2027, bringing the bloc's cumulative representation to 12 years. Oba Yahaya said the Igbomina bloc had only produced the late Senator Makanjuola Ajadi, who served for approximately five years.

Call for Fairness and Equity

“Based on the existing rotational arrangement and in the interest of fairness, equity and justice, it is the turn of the Igbomina bloc to produce the next senator for Kwara South in 2027,” he stated. The monarch recalled that stakeholders from across the district, at a meeting held in November 2025, unanimously endorsed the position that the next senator should emerge from the Igbomina bloc. He urged political leaders and stakeholders at both the state and national levels to support the demand in order to preserve the unity, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence that have characterised the district over the years.

Collective Position

“This position represents the collective view of the Igbomina Traditional Rulers Forum and stakeholders across Kwara South Senatorial District,” the monarch added. The traditional rulers expressed confidence that strict adherence to the zoning arrangement would further strengthen political harmony, inclusiveness and stability within the district ahead of the 2027 general elections.
