The sudden defection of Peter Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reshuffled opposition politics in Lagos State. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour's decision to remain in the ADC, rather than follow the Obidient Movement into the NDC, has introduced fresh calculations into the 2027 governorship race.
Background of the Split
In the 2023 elections, Rhodes-Vivour emerged as a strong contender under the Labour Party, powered by the Obidient wave and support from non-indigenous voters. He finished as the first runner-up to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. After internal crises in the Labour Party, both Obi and Rhodes-Vivour moved to the ADC, aiming to preserve the Obidient structure. However, Obi's recent migration to the NDC has split the movement.
Rhodes-Vivour's Strategic Choice
Rhodes-Vivour explained his decision, stating that the ADC is the platform he has built and fought on. He emphasized that his political journey has been guided by conviction, not convenience. He remains committed to challenging the APC in Lagos, rejecting past offers from the ruling party.
Analysts note that the split has fragmented the opposition base. Political analyst Gbenga Sowunmi said Rhodes-Vivour's 2027 prospects depend on building an independent political structure in Lagos, as the emotional wave of 2023 has diminished. Another analyst, Chike Anobi, added that Obidient supporters are now split between loyalty to Obi and local loyalty to Rhodes-Vivour.
Impact on Future Elections
The ADC and NDC now function as distinct opposition blocs, reducing the potency of their collective challenge to the APC. Rhodes-Vivour's ability to consolidate grassroots support and forge durable alliances will be crucial. Without the unified Obidient movement, his path to victory becomes steeper, but his continued presence in ADC offers organizational stability.
Observers believe the coming months will test whether Rhodes-Vivour can transition from a movement-driven candidate to a structurally independent political force capable of winning the Lagos governorship.
