Makinde Declares Support for Adekanmbi
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially named Bimbo Adekanmbi, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate, as his preferred successor for the 2027 election. This announcement comes amid shifting political alliances in the state.
The declaration took place during a political event in Ibadan, where leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APM appeared together. This has fueled speculation about a possible coalition ahead of the next election cycle.
Endorsement Sparks Political Reactions
Recent weeks saw growing speculation about Makinde backing Adekanmbi, especially after the governor declared his intention to run for president in 2027. The rumors intensified following a joint rally in Ibadan where Makinde sat alongside Adekanmbi and officials from both parties.
At the official unveiling of Adekanmbi as APM's consensus candidate, Makinde openly stated his preference. He described the political developments as part of a broader strategy that could extend beyond Oyo State.
"I am here to tell you two things. First, I thank you for your support for this administration and for the current political arrangement in Oyo State, which will soon go national. You have tasted Omituntun 1.0 and 2.0. Is it sweet? This is Omituntun 3.0," Makinde said.
Call for Independent Leadership
The governor urged Adekanmbi to forge his own political path rather than inherit existing rivalries. He emphasized building on the achievements of his administration.
"I have told Bimbo, don't inherit my enemies; chart your own path. I am only human, and I make mistakes like everyone else," Makinde stated.
Focus on Development
Makinde encouraged Adekanmbi to strengthen and expand existing policies if elected, stressing that governance should prioritize citizens' welfare. "He should improve on the good things we have done for the people of Oyo State," he added.
Political Landscape Shifts
The endorsement has triggered discussions in Oyo State as parties position for the 2027 elections. Observers believe this could reshape alliances and voter dynamics as succession politics intensifies.
In related news, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has reportedly changed his preferred successor for the 2027 election, shifting support from Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki to Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu.
