The Labour Party in Nasarawa State has entered a new political phase following the emergence of Asoloko Maku as the new state chairman under the Senator Nenadi Usman-led leadership structure. This development signals what party members describe as the beginning of an aggressive grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
New Leadership Emerges
Maku emerged after congresses conducted by party members loyal to the Nenadi Usman faction. This reflects the ongoing realignment and restructuring within the Labour Party across Nigeria following months of internal leadership battles.
Speaking during a press conference in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, the newly elected chairman described the congresses as peaceful, democratic, and evidence that the party remains united despite internal disagreements and external criticism.
Grassroots Engagement Priority
According to him, the Labour Party in Nasarawa is determined to reposition itself as a credible political alternative capable of challenging dominant political parties in future elections.
Maku stated that the newly inaugurated leadership would focus heavily on grassroots engagement, reconciliation among aggrieved members, and rebuilding confidence among supporters across the state.
He noted that although the party had experienced internal crises in recent months, court judgments delivered between 2025 and 2026 had now settled the leadership disputes at the national level. This allows the party to focus fully on political mobilisation and strategic planning.
Legal Battles Resolved
The Nasarawa Labour Party chairman specifically referenced judgments which reportedly affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership while invalidating the continued claim to office by former National Chairman, Julius Abure.
According to Maku, the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, overturned earlier decisions that recognised Abure’s leadership. Subsequent rulings by the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal further strengthened the authority of the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker structure.
The development is expected to reshape Labour Party politics in several states as loyalists of both factions continue efforts to consolidate control ahead of future political contests.
Political Implications
Political observers believe the emergence of a new leadership in Nasarawa may strengthen the party’s preparations for 2027. This is particularly significant at a time when opposition parties are trying to expand their influence across the North Central region.
Maku also used the opportunity to appeal to members with opposing views to embrace unity and work collectively for the future of the party.
He emphasized that his administration would operate an inclusive leadership system built on transparency, fairness, and active grassroots participation.
Party Vision
The chairman further assured party supporters that the Labour Party would continue advocating for social justice, workers’ welfare, youth inclusion, and equitable governance.
According to him, the party remains committed to defending the interests of ordinary Nigerians, including farmers, traders, artisans, and unemployed youths struggling under the country’s difficult economic realities.
He stressed that preparations for the 2027 general elections must begin immediately, noting that political parties that fail to organise early may struggle to remain competitive.
Mobilisation Strategy
Maku said the Labour Party intends to strengthen its structures across all local government areas and wards in Nasarawa State while mobilising more young people and first-time voters into the political process.
He added that the ultimate objective of the party is not only to participate in future elections but also to secure elective positions at both state and national levels.
Broader Political Context
The latest development comes as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to witness strategic repositioning, coalition discussions, and internal restructuring among major opposition parties ahead of the next election cycle.
Analysts say the Labour Party’s ability to maintain internal unity after its prolonged leadership crisis could significantly influence its performance in 2027. This is especially true in states where the party recorded growing support during the 2023 elections.
For many supporters in Nasarawa, the emergence of a new leadership is being viewed as an opportunity to rebuild momentum and restore confidence within the party’s structure after months of uncertainty and legal disputes.
