The leader of Afenifere and the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, has raised urgent concerns over Nigeria's escalating insecurity, deepening economic distress, and growing democratic fragility, declaring that the nation is "bleeding" and in dire need of a fundamental political and policy overhaul.
Security and Economic Crisis
Speaking at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) national convention in Bauchi, Olaitan described Nigeria's current situation as systemic rather than accidental. He highlighted rampant banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and communal conflicts that have eroded public safety across many regions. Farmlands have become hazardous, preventing rural communities from farming or traveling freely due to persistent attacks by criminal elements. The elder statesman warned that the insecurity crisis now directly threatens food production, rural livelihoods, and national stability.
Olaitan also condemned the worsening economic conditions, pointing to rising inflation and soaring living costs that have plunged millions into hardship. Ordinary citizens struggle to survive as food prices, transportation costs, electricity tariffs, and other essential expenses continue to climb beyond their reach. "Our youths roam the streets without jobs, while farmers and traders struggle daily just to survive," he said, labeling the situation a national emergency.
Democratic Pressures and Political Alignment
Regarding Nigeria's democracy, Olaitan warned that the system is under increasing strain due to a shrinking space for constructive opposition and political pluralism. He argued that democracy thrives only when opposition voices can operate freely, cautioning against efforts to weaken alternative political platforms. Using a metaphor, he stated: "What is wrong with thousands of birds flying when the sky is wide enough for every flight?"
He attributed many challenges to policy choices that prioritize market forces over social welfare, insisting that the hardship is neither accidental nor inevitable. Nigeria urgently needs policies focused on citizens' welfare, job creation, agricultural revival, industrial development, and social justice. Olaitan openly aligned Afenifere with the SDP, describing the party as best positioned to address structural and governance challenges, representing a return to a welfarist economic philosophy rooted in equity and state-driven development.
Call for People-Oriented Policies
Olaitan outlined key areas where government must play a stronger role, including agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, job creation, and access to affordable credit. Only a people-oriented economic model can reverse Nigeria's deepening social and economic crisis. He urged SDP leaders to prioritize ideology, competence, and public service over personal ambition, warning that Nigeria cannot afford self-interested leadership. He described the SDP as a party with ideological depth and historical relevance, capable of offering a credible alternative if properly positioned.
Unity and Future Vision
Stressing the need for unity beyond ethnic and religious divisions, Olaitan called for a shared vision of peace, prosperity, and dignity for all citizens. "Together, we must rescue Nigeria and build a country where peace and prosperity are not privileges, but rights," he declared. Participants at the convention described the speech as a defining political statement that has intensified conversations around governance reform, economic restructuring, and the future of Nigeria's democracy.
