Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), has declared that his party is now strategically positioned to play a decisive and transformative role in the future of Nigeria's democracy. He made this assertion during the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and National Convention held in Abuja on 20 December 2025.
Unity and Discipline as Cornerstones for 2027
Addressing party members, Kwankwaso emphasized that as the NNPP gears up for the 2027 general elections, its greatest strengths lie in internal discipline, unity, and a firm commitment to democratic principles within its ranks. He urged members to attend the convention and support the election of a new national leadership to steer the party for the next four-year term.
"We may not be the biggest party numerically today, but I strongly believe we are the most organised, most committed and most disciplined party in Nigeria," Kwankwaso stated. "At this stage before elections, it is not numbers that matter most, but unity, understanding and commitment."
A Testament to Organisational Strength
The NNPP leader highlighted that the party had successfully conducted peaceful and rancour-free congresses at the ward, local government, state, and zonal levels across the nation. He described this achievement as clear proof of the NNPP's growing organisational capability and its dedication to upholding democratic values. Kwankwaso commended members for concluding these exercises so efficiently that many Nigerians were unaware they had been completed nationwide.
In a significant gesture, Kwankwaso also congratulated the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pledging the party's full cooperation and support. He stressed that credible elections are a fundamental pillar for Nigeria's continued stability and progress.
Leadership Transition and Renewed Vision
Earlier at the convention, the NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, noted that the gathering marked a pivotal moment for the party as delegates were set to elect new national officers. This follows the expiration of the tenure of the current leadership elected in 2022. Ahmed asserted that the NNPP has been thoroughly repositioned and restructured to stand as a major stakeholder in Nigeria's democratic process, with the nation looking to it for a credible alternative in leadership.
The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, praised Kwankwaso's leadership, describing him as a courageous and wise leader who guided the party through challenging periods. Gwarzo stated that the NNPP administration in Kano has demonstrated that good governance and tangible dividends of democracy are achievable.
"From reports across the states and the way we conduct ourselves, I do not think there is any party that matches the NNPP in terms of organisation and grassroots presence," Gwarzo added.
Concluding the key addresses, the National Secretary, Mr. Dipo Olayoku, reflected on the party's resilience. He noted that despite facing sustained legal and political attacks from former members, the judiciary and INEC had consistently upheld the rule of law in the NNPP's favour. "All that is history now, and as a political party, we have moved on," he said, citing the performance of Governor Yusuf and other elected NNPP officials as evidence of the party's renewed vigour and strength.
