In a move that signals a major shift in the political landscape of Lagos State, the long-serving Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Dr. Mudashiru Obasa, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives. The declaration took place before a sea of All Progressives Congress (APC) party leaders, stakeholders, and enthusiastic supporters.
End of an Era in State Legislature
The announcement marks the conclusion of an era for the state legislature, where Obasa has been a fixture for over two decades. His legislative journey began in 2003, and he has represented Agege Constituency I for 23 years, with more than a decade spent presiding as Speaker. Obasa noted that the decision to move to the National Assembly was fueled by a desire to scale his impact and bring his experience to bear on national issues.
Support from Party Leaders
The event was attended by prominent APC figures, including local government chairmen, ward executives, and youth leaders, who pledged their unwavering support for Obasa's candidacy. They praised his leadership in the state assembly and expressed confidence in his ability to represent Agege at the federal level.
Obasa's declaration is seen as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 general elections, positioning him for a higher legislative role while opening up the race for his successor in the state assembly. Political analysts note that his transition could reshape alliances and influence the APC's strategy in Lagos.
