A political associate of Peter Obi, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, has provided further insights into the former presidential candidate's reported one-term pledge and long-term political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi's One-Term Commitment Reaffirmed
Speaking during a television interview alongside political analyst Abdullahi Ahmed, Abdulkarim stated that Obi remains resolute in his promise to serve only one term if elected president. He emphasized that this commitment is part of a broader political transition plan.
According to Abdulkarim, critics who doubt Obi's pledge fail to grasp the long-term vision of his camp. He declared, "Even if you put a gun to his head, he is going to do one term."
Reforms Achievable in Four Years
Abdulkarim argued that significant reforms can be accomplished within a single four-year term. He noted, "Some people destroy a whole country in just two years. Someone can come and change the nation's trajectory within four years and restore our institutions to functionality."
Defending Obi's Record in Anambra
Responding to criticisms of Obi's tenure as governor of Anambra State, Abdulkarim acknowledged that no politician is perfect but maintained that Obi's achievements outweigh any shortcomings. He said, "If your good side is 90 percent and your bad side is one, you still get an A, but you must acknowledge the bad side."
He also highlighted Obi's financial prudence, noting that the former governor left funds in the state treasury after completing his term. "What did he do in Anambra? He left money," Abdulkarim added.
Succession Plan for Kwankwaso After 2031
Abdulkarim disclosed that Obi's supporters are already discussing a succession arrangement that would transfer power to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso after 2031. The idea is centered on continuity and sustaining reforms beyond a single administration.
He explained, "He has someone he is working with, and they understand where they are going. Okay, hand over to Kwankwaso after 2031—that is what they are thinking, that is our plan, that is what we want to do."
He continued, "We want from him to move to Kwankwaso. That is our thinking. That is how we see it because we know it is continuity."
Focus on Long-Term Reforms
The political ally stressed that discussions within the movement go beyond winning elections and are focused on building institutions that can sustain governance reforms. He said, "We are not planning this with Peter Obi just for one term and then everyone walks away."
He added, "From day one, even during our campaign, we will start planning, adjusting, and identifying which government agencies need to be revitalized so that other activities can follow."
The group also aims to reduce excessive concentration of power at the presidency and strengthen institutions for future administrations.
Obi Criticizes INEC
In a related development, Legit.ng reported that Peter Obi accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of acting in the interest of the presidency ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi made the remarks during an interview with journalist Kayode Akintemi, expressing concerns over the electoral body's neutrality and the leadership of its chairman.
