Political commentator Japheth Omojuwa has predicted a three-way contest for the 2027 presidential election, asserting that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso will align with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in another political party. In a post on his verified X account on Friday, May 1, Omojuwa stated that the 2027 election will feature three major contenders.
Omojuwa's Prediction
According to Omojuwa, Kwankwaso will move with Obi to a different party, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his supporters will maintain their own faction. He described the situation as a three-horse race, adding that it will be an interesting political period.
Obi-Kwankwaso Bloc Weighs Options
Reports indicate that fresh political realignments are underway within Nigeria's opposition space ahead of the 2027 elections. Loyalists of Obi and Kwankwaso are reportedly pressuring for a strategic shift from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to lingering uncertainties. The emerging alliance, known as the OK Movement, is exploring alternative platforms for a possible joint presidential ticket.
These developments follow a recent Supreme Court ruling on the ADC leadership tussle. While the court recognized the David Mark faction, it also directed parties to return to the Federal High Court for further proceedings, leaving the situation inconclusive.
Potential New Platforms
Sources within the opposition reveal that the Obi-Kwankwaso bloc is considering the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a platform promoted by former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson. The goal is to build a united front early and avoid protracted legal crises closer to the elections.
Unconfirmed reports suggest Kwankwaso may be considering a move to the NDC. He is expected to convene a high-level stakeholders' meeting in Kano to formalize his next political direction.
Jaafar Jaafar's Advice
Media entrepreneur Jaafar Jaafar advised Obi and Kwankwaso to remain in the ADC coalition rather than part ways. He warned that moving to the NDC might not be a wise gamble, as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could potentially infiltrate any opposition platform. Jaafar emphasized that the challenges facing the ADC are not just internal but also stem from a corrupt judiciary and biased electoral umpire.
He urged the opposition leaders to stay united in the ADC, stating that a boat cannot move forward if everyone rows in their own direction.
ADC Talks with Jonathan
Earlier reports indicated that the ADC has been holding discreet talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan over a possible presidential run in 2027. A chieftain of the party confirmed the discussions but said no decision has been made on an automatic ticket.
