The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, of threatening to shut down the venue for former President Goodluck Jonathan's ratification ceremony in Abuja.
PDP Alleges Wike's Threat to Event Venue
In a statement released on Friday, May 29, 2026, via its official X handle @OfficialPDPNig, the PDP Interim National Working Committee alleged that Wike threatened to close down the A Class Event Centre in Wuse 2, Abuja, if it hosted the event for Jonathan.
PDP Confirms Event Schedule Despite Threats
The PDP confirmed that the ratification ceremony is still scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the A Class Event Centre, starting at 10 a.m. The party stated that it has fulfilled all necessary requirements, including full payment for the venue and notification to relevant security agencies.
"We state here, and for the record, that we had furnished consideration in full to consummate the earlier offer and acceptance," the statement read. "Furthermore, we had duly notified all relevant security agencies about the event. We have directed our lawyers to write, reminding A Class Event Centre of these facts."
Legal Action Initiated
The PDP has instructed its legal team to write to the event centre, reminding it of its compliance with security protocols and contractual obligations. The party reiterated that the special convention to ratify the presidential candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan will proceed as planned, despite what it termed as intimidation by the FCT minister.
This development comes amid ongoing political tensions within the PDP, as factions continue to jostle for control ahead of the 2027 general elections. The ratification ceremony is seen as a key step in solidifying Jonathan's potential return to the presidential race.
