PDP Faction Declares Jonathan Presidential Candidate in Absentia
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Turaki has announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The decision was ratified at a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki district, Abuja on Saturday, May 30.
Jonathan was not present at the convention. His certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa state. The Turaki-led faction had initially planned to hold its convention at the A-Class Park and Event Centre but had to relocate after the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), under the supervision of Minister Nyesom Wike, directed hotels and event centres to only deal with political party leadership recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Earlier that morning, Nigeria Police Force personnel placed barricades along the road leading to the A-Class Park and Event Centre, forcing party members to change the venue. Party leaders stated that another date will be announced for the formal presentation of the party flag to Jonathan.
