The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has made a passionate appeal for unity and hope, directing its message to all Nigerians as the nation faces persistent trials. In a special Christmas reflection, the party's leadership called for a collective spirit to tackle the country's deep-seated issues.
Christmas as a Catalyst for National Cohesion
On 27 December 2025, the SDP's National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, issued a statement titled “Nigeria’s Hope in Challenging Times: A Christmas Reflection.” He specifically urged the Christian community and all citizens to draw inspiration from the festive season to foster a stronger sense of togetherness and shared duty.
Gabam framed Christmas as a pivotal period that should motivate Nigerians to transcend their differences. He described the potential for every citizen to become a “beacon of hope and unity.” The chairman argued that the nation's multifaceted challenges, including insecurity and economic strain, demand a unified front and a common purpose to be successfully overcome.
A Call for Compassion and Practical Action
The SDP leader highlighted the critical role of Christians in promoting peace through love and understanding within their communities. He encouraged tangible acts of kindness as a foundation for social strength.
Gabam's message included a direct call to action:
- Reaching out to the less privileged in society.
- Providing food for those who are hungry.
- Offering comfort to people who are brokenhearted.
- Showing genuine empathy to strangers.
He stated that such deeds are essential for building robust social bonds and cultivating mutual respect among Nigerians from all walks of life.
Transcending Divisions for a Better Nigeria
Drawing deeply from Christian teachings, Chairman Gabam stressed the paramount importance of loving one's neighbour. He emphasized the need to consciously move beyond the barriers of tribe, ethnicity, and religion. The vision, he said, is a Nigeria where every citizen can live free from fear and with guaranteed access to justice, equality, and personal dignity.
On the economic front, Gabam openly acknowledged the severe hardship affecting millions of Nigerians. However, he expressed optimism, believing that positive change is attainable through collective effort and responsible leadership. He advocated for policies that ensure transparency, accountability, and inclusive growth, insisting that the economy must work for the vast majority, not just a select few.
The chairman also urged Christians to engage in fervent prayer for the nation, its leaders, and for peace across all communities. He coupled this spiritual appeal with a practical warning against division, bitterness, and hatred, instead championing the causes of unity and national reconciliation.
“As we celebrate this festive season, let us choose hope, love and compassion. Let us choose Nigeria and work together towards a brighter future for all,” Gabam concluded, voicing confidence in the country's future if citizens remain steadfast and committed to building a peaceful, just, and prosperous nation.
