Tension as Obi, Kwankwaso take action to stop NDC deregistration before 2027
Tension as Obi, Kwankwaso act to stop NDC deregistration

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has ramped up efforts to challenge a Federal High Court ruling that reversed its registration ahead of the 2027 general election. The party is preparing to file an appeal at the Court of Appeal following the decision by the Lokoja, Kogi State division of the court, which set aside an earlier order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the NDC.

High-level meetings to strengthen legal strategy

The party’s leadership, including presidential candidate Peter Obi, National Leader Seriake Dickson, and National Working Committee members, has held a series of emergency meetings to coordinate the appeal process. A senior party official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the meetings focused on reinforcing the party’s legal approach.

“Even as we speak, there is another emergency meeting ongoing ahead of tomorrow’s appeal,” the source said, adding that the party’s National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, would play a key role.

Kwankwaso expresses confidence in legal battle

Former Kano State Governor and NDC leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso expressed optimism about overcoming the setback. After meeting with Dickson in Abuja, Kwankwaso stated, according to Punch, “The engagement forms part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the party’s unity, resilience and strategic readiness as we prepare for the 2027 general elections.”

He added, “No temporary setback can weaken the spirit of a movement built on hope, justice, equity and the collective aspirations of the Nigerian people.”

NDC insists candidates will be on ballot

The party maintained that the court decision does not end its participation in the 2027 elections. National Chairman Moses Cleopas affirmed that Obi, Kwankwaso, and other candidates will contest under the NDC platform, as reported by Vanguard.

“We are not shaking because we are stronger,” Cleopas said, emphasizing the party’s confidence in the judicial process and its commitment to pursuing all legal options.
