The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed Governor Hyacinth Alia for a second term in office. The declaration was made during a high-level reconciliation meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Benue State.
President's Directive
Akume stated, "President Tinubu has directed that Governor Alia be returned for a second term." He urged party members to unite behind the governor to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
Governor Alia's Apology
During the meeting, Governor Alia acknowledged internal tensions and admitted to shortcomings in his leadership. "I should have provided leadership and taken responsibility," he said, offering an apology to party stakeholders. This gesture was seen as a move to foster unity.
Reconciliation Efforts
The closed-door meeting brought together key APC figures in Benue to resolve internal disputes. Party insiders indicated that a formal communiqué would be issued outlining resolutions. The gathering aimed to stabilize the party structure and prepare for electoral contests.
Previous Endorsement in Lagos
This development follows a similar endorsement by President Tinubu in Lagos State, where he chose Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as his preferred candidate for the APC governorship ticket. That decision was made during a meeting with the Governance Advisory Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
