The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has initiated a major push to reclaim its position at the helm of Nigeria's political landscape. Under the leadership of its National Chairman, Dr. Kabiru Turaki, the party's National Working Committee (NWC) held a crucial interactive session on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in Abuja.
A Strategic Gathering for a Comeback
The meeting brought together former governors and ministers who served under the PDP's banner during its 16-year tenure at the federal level. Dr. Turaki described the assembly as a deliberate and strategic move aimed at reconnecting the opposition party with the Nigerian electorate. The central declaration from the session was the party's unwavering determination to reclaim political power at both the national and state levels.
Addressing the seasoned political leaders, Turaki reflected on the party's legacy. He argued that the PDP's years in government were marked by landmark projects, the establishment of strong institutions, and policies that tangibly improved the lives of citizens. According to him, the evidence of these achievements remains visible across the country, even a decade after the party left office, despite what he termed as sustained efforts to discredit its record.
Nostalgia for the PDP Era and Foundational Values
Turaki pointed to what he called an enduring nostalgia among Nigerians for the PDP era, suggesting this sentiment underscores the strong bond the party once forged with voters. He detailed specific accomplishments, stating that under PDP administrations, Nigeria experienced significant economic growth, freed itself from a crippling debt burden, and saw considerable expansion in infrastructure.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the party strengthened vital institutions that continue to underpin governance, project execution, and anti-corruption efforts today. The National Chairman stressed that the new NWC is committed to steering the party back to its foundational values. A key part of this reset, he noted, is engaging the very leaders whose sacrifices and service defined the PDP's golden era—a period when it became the first party to win four consecutive presidential elections and peacefully transfer power from one civilian government to another.
Seeking Frank Counsel and Promising Reform
Turaki framed the meeting as a family gathering designed for candid and unrestrained discussion. He revealed that the party sought frank guidance from its former leaders on the specific policies, leadership styles, and approaches that originally won public trust and made the PDP a household name. Such counsel, he added, is vital as the party plans its repositioning to offer a credible and attractive alternative to Nigerians.
In a significant pledge, Dr. Turaki assured both party members and the general public that the PDP is prepared to admit to past mistakes and correct them. He promised a new chapter characterized by transparency, equity, fairness, and justice in all the party's dealings. Expressing strong confidence, he concluded that with renewed unity and honest self-assessment, the Peoples Democratic Party is on a clear path to return stronger and more formidable in the near future.
