Wike: Fubara's APC Defection Needs No 'Clearance', 2027 Win Not Guaranteed
Wike Breaks Silence on Fubara's APC Defection

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara does not require his approval to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike's Stance on Political Defections

Speaking during a media chat in Port Harcourt on Monday, December 29, Wike addressed the recent political realignments in Rivers State. He stated that he possesses no authority to prevent anyone from associating with a political party of their choice.

The minister described Governor Fubara's move to the APC as a natural progression, following similar defections by pro-Wike lawmakers and local government chairmen. Seventeen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on December 5, 2025.

No Automatic Ticket to Victory in 2027

However, Wike issued a crucial caveat amidst the discussions. He emphasised that merely changing political parties does not automatically translate to electoral success. The FCT minister clearly noted that Governor Fubara's defection to the APC does not guarantee an automatic victory in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Wike further used the platform to reiterate his unwavering loyalty to President Bola Tinubu. He asserted that his political alignment is unambiguous, especially as the nation gears up for the next election cycle. The former Rivers governor advocated for greater integrity and honesty within Nigeria's political sphere.

The political landscape in Rivers State has witnessed significant shifts in late 2025. Governor Fubara announced his defection during a stakeholders' meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, joining a number of other state governors who have moved to the APC this year.
