Youth Party Reschedules Congresses, Issues Primaries Guidelines

The Youth Party has rescheduled its 2026 congresses and national convention as part of efforts to strengthen internal structures and prepare for future elections. The party also issued comprehensive guidelines for its 2027 primary elections.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) stated that these decisions aim to deepen internal democracy, ensure regulatory compliance, and expand participation among members nationwide. The party released a full timetable for ward, local government, and state congresses, leading to the national convention scheduled for May 23, 2026.

Ward congresses will take place on May 16, followed by local government congresses on May 18, state congresses on May 20, and the national convention on May 23. Sale of forms began on March 15, with different closing dates; forms for the national convention are available until May 10. Nomination fees range from N2,500 for ward-level positions to N250,000 for national chair.

The party outlined a structured appeals process for each stage, encouraging members to participate actively and assuring transparency. For the 2027 general elections, the Youth Party issued primary election guidelines in line with the Electoral Act and INEC regulations. Sale of nomination forms runs from March 2 to May 20, 2026, with aspirant screening on May 25 and primaries on May 29.

In a significant move, the party will use the One Member, One Vote (OMOV) model, eliminating delegates and allowing all registered members to vote. Voting will be electronic via online and SMS platforms, with security and transparency measures. The process will be monitored by candidates and INEC.

Nomination fees include N35 million for presidential, N14 million for governorship, N2.5 million for Senate, N1.5 million for House of Representatives, and N250,000 for State House of Assembly. To encourage broader participation, a 50% reduction applies to women, persons with disabilities, and youths aged 40 and below.
