Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared his intention to give opposition candidates, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, high blood pressure in the run-up to the 2027 general election. Speaking to journalists on Friday, August 21, during an inspection of infrastructure projects in Abuja, Wike dismissed the opposition's relevance and vowed to intensify pressure on them.
Wike Dismisses Opposition Strength
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, asserted that there is currently no credible opposition in Nigeria. He argued that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which would naturally assume the role of the leading opposition party, has been weakened by internal crises. “I have told you, when you say we are leading the opposition, I have told you there is no opposition. What do you have? People who are just looking to see if they can stay relevant,” he said.
He further questioned the leadership of the opposition, noting that the PDP's internal strife has left it unable to present a formidable challenge. “Who is the opposition leader now? Obviously, it would have been PDP, but because of the crisis we have gone through, you can’t see a strong party that you would call the leading opposition party,” Wike added.
Wike's Strategy for 2027
The FCT Minister made it clear that his focus is not on the well-being of opposition figures but on ensuring they face continuous discomfort. “So, I don’t care; whatever they feel is not my business. I don’t want them to feel well. My job is to make them feel unwell all day because they will have high blood pressure. I think that’s my job, to make them have high blood pressure,” he stated.
Wike emphasized that his actions are deliberate, aimed at destabilizing the opposition's morale. “I’m not here to make them perform well. And that is what we are doing to them. So, we have to be patient. It does not give me any headache. Everyone understands now what they’re going through, and I’m going to make things even harder for them,” he said.
Impact on Political Landscape
Wike's comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. His remarks are expected to further strain relations between the ruling party and opposition groups, particularly the ADC and the PDP. The minister's stance signals a confrontational approach to opposition politics, potentially shaping the dynamics of the upcoming electoral contest.
As the political atmosphere intensifies, Wike's promise to make opposition candidates 'feel unwell' underscores the high-stakes nature of Nigeria's political arena. With the 2027 election still years away, his statements set the tone for a fiercely contested political season.
