Abubakar Mahmoud Turbaned as Garkuwan Kano

Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud (SAN) has been turbaned with the traditional title of Garkuwan Kano by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. The ceremony took place at the Emir's Gidan Rumfa palace in Kano, drawing a distinguished audience that included former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo. Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Kano NDC governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and a host of dignitaries from across the country also attended.

Significance of the Garkuwa Title

The Garkuwa title, meaning "Shield of Kano," is one of the most prestigious honours in the Kano Emirate. It historically recognizes individuals who serve as protectors of the community and embody moral and symbolic shields of society. The title is bestowed upon those who have demonstrated strong contributions to community development, education, and youth empowerment. Emir Sanusi II described Mahmoud as a man whose life's work reflects the ideals of protection, guidance, and service to humanity. The Emir said, "We gave you the title of Garkuwa, having looked at your enormous contribution to the legal sector and what you represent in the area of ensuring social justice and how you served the state as former Commissioner of Justice, became one of the faces of Kano and the north, when you led the NBA."

Mahmoud's Legacy of Public Service

Mahmoud, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice of Kano State, has long been celebrated for his activism, intellect, and commitment to justice and social welfare. His journey began at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he engaged in Marxist study circles focused on understanding exploitation and oppression. According to a tribute by Professor Jibrin Ibrahim, "The first stage of that legacy was our collective engagement as students in the struggle for the emancipation of all oppressed peoples and persons." Mahmoud's vision of law as a defender of the public good led him to join the Kano State public service, where he rose through every grade in the Ministry of Justice, from Pupil Counsel to Solicitor-General, and eventually Attorney-General. He later excelled in private practice.

Community Engagement and Environmental Advocacy

Mahmoud has remained deeply engaged in community life, including efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. He worked on a Kano Forum on COVID-19, focusing on community awareness, policy engagement with the state government, and relief efforts with philanthropists. He is also active in environmental advocacy, a theme his father championed, and will now lead the AB Mahmoud Environment and Sustainability Trust. Professor Ibrahim noted, "The summary of the argument here is that maybe the best way to start a life of service is to commence with a commitment to Marxism."

Recognition and Future Outlook

The turbanning event also featured a strong delegation from civil society, academia, labour, and social movements. Comrade John Odah, former General Secretary of the Nigerian Labour Congress, led the radical wing, while writer Nurudeen Farah offered reflections on xenophobia. A large delegation of lawyers also graced the occasion. As Mahmoud assumes the title of Garkuwan Kano, well-wishers express confidence that he will continue to champion honour, unity, and progress. Professor Ibrahim concluded, "May his reign bring further prosperity, peace and harmony to Kano and to the nation at large."
