The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has revealed that the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali was one of his personal heroes and coaches. During a Sunday sermon titled "Divine Champion" delivered at the church's Lagos headquarters on August 3, Adeboye shared how Ali's tactics in the ring have influenced his understanding of life and leadership, just days before the RCCG's 74th Annual Convention kicks off on August 4.
Adeboye's Revelation About Ali
Speaking to a packed congregation, Adeboye recounted lessons learned from Ali and his own boxing coach, emphasizing the importance of mental preparation and strategy. "I learned many things from the late world boxing champion Muhammad Ali and my coach when I was a boxer," he said. He recalled how Ali would provoke opponents with verbal taunts before a fight to make them lose composure, a tactic that underscored the need for focus and discipline.
"One of the things I learned from Ali is that before any fight, he would provoke his opponent with insults so they would become furious before stepping into the ring," Adeboye explained. He used this analogy to illustrate how Christians must remain calm and rely on divine wisdom when facing spiritual battles.
Spiritual Lessons and Encouragement
Adeboye urged worshippers to see God as their ultimate coach, stating that divine guidance equips believers to overcome life's challenges. He also reflected on advice from his boxing trainer about handling setbacks, encouraging the congregation to persevere in faith. "He will renew your strength. A true champion is the one who laughs last, not someone who never makes mistakes," he said.
The cleric concluded by calling on Christians to remain consistent in prayer and steadfast in faith despite obstacles. He also expressed confidence that the upcoming convention would be the best in the church's history, promising a transformative experience for attendees.
Context and Previous Statements
This is not the first time Adeboye has drawn from sports to deliver spiritual messages. In a related development, Legit.ng earlier reported that Pastor Adeboye praised US President Donald Trump during the US-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala in Washington on June 23, 2026. He described Trump as "the best politician I have ever met," citing his consistency in keeping promises, and urged President Bola Tinubu to strengthen Nigeria-US ties on counter-terrorism.
The RCCG's 74th Annual Convention, scheduled to begin on August 4 in Lagos, is expected to draw thousands of worshippers from Nigeria and abroad, with Adeboye's sermon setting the tone for a week of spiritual renewal and reflection.
