APC Convention Drama: Aspirant Cries Foul as Groups Buy Forms for Yilwatda, Idele
As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for its national convention scheduled for March 27-28, 2026, support groups have purchased Nomination and Expression of Interest forms for key party leaders, including National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and National Women Leader Mary Idele. However, the process has sparked controversy, with an aspirant for the position of National Secretary alleging that he was denied access to the nomination forms, raising questions about internal party democracy.
Support Groups Rally Behind Party Leaders
The Prince Simon Ali Support Organisation has acquired the N10 million forms for Yilwatda, aiming to retain him as National Chairman. Dominic Alancha, the Director-General of the group, stated that this move demonstrates confidence in Yilwatda's leadership and his ability to guide the party to victory in future elections. Alancha emphasized that the payment was made on behalf of the organization, not personally, and dismissed claims that aspirants from certain states are being barred from obtaining forms, noting that some individuals have successfully accessed them.
In a parallel development, women from across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, led by Joyce Ibrahim, have procured forms for Idele, advocating for increased female participation in politics. They urged women to engage actively in elections and policy advocacy, stressing that support for women in public office should be based on competence and performance.
Media and Publicity Subcommittee Inaugurated
To coordinate communication efforts for the convention, the APC has inaugurated a 91-member Media and Publicity Subcommittee, chaired by Mai Mala Buni. During the inauguration in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, who serves as co-chairman, described the upcoming convention as a significant milestone for the party. Idris, participating virtually from London where he is accompanying President Tinubu on a state visit, highlighted the event's role in strengthening internal democracy and shaping the party's political direction.
Yilwatda Emphasizes Unity and Democratic Values
In a statement, Yilwatda underscored the importance of integrity, humility, and commitment to national progress within the APC leadership. He asserted that the party is focused on building a structure that reflects Nigerians' aspirations and enhances democratic governance. Yilwatda called for unity, noting that a cohesive political platform is essential for national stability and development.
