APC Signals Readiness to Welcome Kwankwaso Amid Kano's Political Reshuffling
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly declared its openness to receiving former Kano State governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into its fold. This announcement comes during a period of significant political realignment in Kano State, following the recent defection of Governor Abba Yusuf from the NNPP to the APC.
APC's Position on Kwankwaso's Potential Membership
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, clarified the party's stance during an interview on Trust TV. While confirming that no formal negotiations are currently underway with Kwankwaso, Yilwatda emphasized that the ruling party's doors remain open should the former governor decide to join.
"Our doors are still open for Kwankwaso to join the APC. If he comes, he's most welcome. Though we are not yet in negotiation with him," stated Yilwatda.
The APC chairman explained that this position aligns with the party's broader strategy of political inclusion, particularly as alliances shift in preparation for future electoral contests. This development follows Governor Yusuf's move to the APC alongside numerous members of the Kano State House of Assembly and House of Representatives, which has substantially altered the state's political landscape.
Defending President Tinubu's International Engagements
During the same interview, Yilwatda addressed mounting criticism regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's frequent foreign trips. He vigorously defended these international engagements as essential for Nigeria's development, citing their importance in attracting foreign investment, negotiating bilateral agreements, and addressing security challenges.
"Because of his experience, exposure and connections, what he can connect in one day will take most of us years to gain and achieve," Yilwatda remarked about the President's diplomatic efforts.
The APC chairman characterized Tinubu's travels as sacrifices made in the national interest, questioning whether Nigerians should take such efforts for granted. He emphasized that the President's global exposure and international networks enable rapid progress on critical national issues that might otherwise require years to accomplish.
Kwankwaso's Response to Political Developments
Meanwhile, Senator Kwankwaso has maintained a defiant stance following Governor Yusuf's departure from the NNPP. The former governor expressed his disappointment by declaring the day of the defection as "World Betrayal Day," while simultaneously asserting the continued strength of his Kwankwasiyya political movement.
In a show of solidarity, supporters from Nasarawa Local Government Area recently gathered at Kwankwaso's Kano residence, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the movement despite recent political setbacks. Kwankwaso acknowledged this support through his social media platforms, praising his followers' determination to uphold the ideals of Kwankwasiyya during what he described as challenging political circumstances.
Political Implications for Kano and Beyond
The ongoing political realignments in Kano State represent a significant development in Nigeria's political landscape, with potential implications for future elections. The APC's overture to Kwankwaso suggests strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, while Kwankwaso's response indicates his determination to maintain an independent political structure despite recent defections.
As political dynamics continue to evolve in Nigeria's most populous state, observers are closely monitoring how these developments will influence party structures, electoral strategies, and governance approaches in the coming years.
