AWALCO President Calls on Journalists to Champion Regional Peace and Unity
In a powerful call to action marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, the President of the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO), Mr. Innocent Odoh, has issued a compelling appeal to journalists across the West African sub-region. He urged media practitioners to make peace and regional unity central pillars of their professional reporting and storytelling efforts.
Goodwill Message Highlights Journalists' Critical Role
The message was formally released by the association's Publicity Secretary, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, and extended warm congratulations to Muslim media professionals and the broader community. Odoh praised their remarkable resilience and unwavering dedication to truth-telling within an increasingly complex and often challenging media environment. He described the Eid-el-Fitr celebration as a profound period of sacrifice and spiritual renewal, encouraging journalists to actively integrate these core values into their daily professional responsibilities and ethical frameworks.
Media as Bridge-Builders in Challenging Times
Odoh emphasized that the media must function decisively as a bridge-builder and a powerful instrument for regional integration. This call is particularly urgent as West Africa continues to navigate a landscape marked by complex socio-political tensions and significant security hurdles. "At a time when our region faces complex security and socio-political challenges, the role of journalists has never been more critical," Odoh stated. "You are not just storytellers; you are bridge-builders, agenda-setters, and custodians of public trust."
He elaborated further, urging journalists to let their reports consistently promote understanding over division, factual truth over harmful misinformation, and unity over discord. "West Africa needs a media that inspires hope, fosters constructive dialogue, and strengthens the bonds that hold us together as a community," he added. According to his analysis, the critical role of the journalist extends far beyond mere storytelling. They are, he noted, the essential custodians of public trust who must consciously choose to promote understanding over division and factual reporting over the dangerous spread of misinformation.
Credible Journalism as a Bedrock for Development
The AWALCO leader further stressed that credible, ethical, and responsible journalism remains the fundamental bedrock of sustainable development and long-term democratic stability throughout the West African region. He noted that by rigorously upholding the highest possible standards of accuracy, fairness, and integrity, media practitioners can actively foster the kind of open and respectful dialogue necessary to strengthen the bonds of cooperation and solidarity between nations.
In his concluding remarks, Odoh encouraged all journalists to harness the reflective and unifying spirit of the Eid season to recommit themselves to impactful, responsible storytelling that genuinely inspires hope and progress. He also extended his heartfelt wishes for a joyous and prosperous celebration to the Muslim faithful, expressing a sincere hope that the occasion brings lasting peace and harmony to the entire West African region.
