Bauchi APC Caucus Divided Over Governor Bala Mohammed's Potential Defection
The Bauchi State Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been plunged into significant disarray following ongoing moves to admit Governor Bala Mohammed into the party, revealing deep and persistent divisions within its ranks. This rift became prominently evident during a recent caucus meeting held in Abuja, where members expressed sharply contrasting and conflicting positions on the political and structural consequences of the governor's proposed defection.
Committee Formed to Manage Tensions
In an effort to manage the escalating tension and potential fallout, the caucus unanimously agreed to establish a high-powered committee tasked with harmonising positions and guiding future engagements. Acting Secretary of the caucus, Dabo Ismail, confirmed that this committee has been specifically charged with articulating the group's conditions and expectations to the party's national leadership should the defection materialise.
According to Ismail, the panel will also interface with key stakeholders to ensure a smooth and inclusive negotiation process, represent the caucus in all related discussions, and provide regular updates on the progress of consultations. While reiterating that Governor Mohammed remains welcome to join the APC, Ismail strongly emphasised the need for the party's national leadership to involve critical stakeholders in Bauchi in any negotiation process to avoid further discord.
Concerns Over Lack of Consultation
Also speaking after the meeting, Chairman of the Bauchi APC Caucus and Senator representing Bauchi North, Sama'ila Dahuwa, expressed strong dissatisfaction over what he described as a severe lack of prior consultation by the party's national leadership on a matter of such magnitude. He warned that sidelining state stakeholders fundamentally undermines the principles of internal democracy, inclusiveness, and respect for established party structures, potentially leading to long-term instability.
Background on Governor Mohammed's Political Moves
Governor Mohammed had, on March 31, 2026, hinted at plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid shifting political alignments ahead of future elections. His political manoeuvres drew further intense attention following a recent visit by APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the Bauchi Government House for a closed-door meeting, sparking widespread speculation.
However, an opposing faction within the APC caucus cited the governor's past comments on the policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration, adding that his criticisms have caused significant division and acrimony in governance, raising questions about his alignment with party values. This internal conflict highlights the broader challenges of political realignment and party cohesion in Nigeria's dynamic electoral landscape.
