Lagos Commissioner Dismisses Reports of Rift Between Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu as Mere Speculation
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, has firmly denied any existence of a rift between Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During an interview on Channels Television's Morning Brief on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Omotoso described the alleged tension as products of imagination and speculation, emphasizing the strong relationship between the two leaders.
Omotoso Labels Rumors as Imaginary and Baseless
In his statement, Omotoso questioned the logic behind such reports, asking, "How will a father say there is no future in his home? The President is a father to Mr Sanwo-Olu." He further explained that most of the circulating stories are mere speculations and imaginary constructs created by those spreading rumors. The commissioner highlighted that President Tinubu has not expressed any displeasure with Governor Sanwo-Olu, noting that Tinubu's visits to Lagos State demonstrate his satisfaction with the governor's performance.
Omotoso added, "If he is not pleased with Mr Sanwo-Olu, he will not be coming to say that Mr Sanwo-Olu should host him for him to see all of the things that he conceived in those days." He acknowledged that as President and Commander-in-Chief, Tinubu has the right to travel anywhere, but stressed that his visits to Lagos are a sign of approval and collaboration.
No Discussion on Tinubu Endorsing a Successor for Sanwo-Olu
When questioned about whether President Tinubu has endorsed any candidate as Sanwo-Olu's successor, Omotoso clarified that such discussions are not currently taking place. He stated, "That is not even being discussed as far as I am concerned. Of course, social media rumours and speculations are all over the place. The question of succession would be discussed." This response aims to quell further speculation about political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections in Lagos State.
Governor Sanwo-Olu Reflects on Leadership and Legacy
In related developments, Governor Sanwo-Olu recently reflected on his leadership experience in an interview, sharing insights from his first term challenges after being sworn in in 2019. As his second and final term approaches its end in 2027, Sanwo-Olu revealed his aspirations for how he wants to be remembered after leaving office. This introspection comes amid ongoing public interest in his political future and relationship with national leadership.
Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu has been active in other governmental matters, such as congratulating Olatunji Disu on his appointment as acting Inspector General of Police by President Tinubu. Sanwo-Olu praised Disu's professionalism and contributions to policing over three decades, calling the appointment a significant honour for Lagos State and the Nigeria Police Force.
The commissioner's remarks serve to reinforce the unity between state and federal leadership, countering narratives that could potentially undermine political stability in Nigeria's economic nerve centre.
