Divine Retribution for Treachery: Lessons from Abimelech

Divine Retribution for Treachery

In a recent message, General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministries, Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, emphasized that God watches over all actions and that consequences extend into eternity. Using biblical examples, he warned against treachery and self-promotion.

The Downfall of Abimelech

Pastor Kumuyi recalled that Abimelech, son of Gideon, killed his brothers to secure power. Though he succeeded for a time, divine judgment eventually caught up with him. God does not approve of treachery, and those who engage in it will face retribution. As Galatians 6:7 states, "God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Believers are urged to sow good seeds to bring forth good fruits in their lives, families, and ministries.

Absalom's Tragedy

Absalom, who lived after Abimelech, failed to learn from history. He promoted himself while his father King David was still alive, stealing the hearts of Israel. Pretending to fulfill a vow, he conspired against David. In his quest for the throne, he died and went to hell. True believers must avoid deceitful actions for gain, regardless of the stakes.

Athaliah's Usurpation and Joash's Rescue

Athaliah, a woman, sought to seize the throne by destroying the royal seed. But Joash was hidden in the house of the Lord for six years. God hides His people from evil to fulfill His purpose. Eventually, Joash was made king, and Athaliah was executed. Gaining royalty at the cost of one's soul is futile.

Moses' Choice

Gideon refused to reign over Israel, and Moses refused Pharaoh's throne, choosing to suffer with God's people. Moses esteemed "the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt." If he had accepted Egypt's offer, he would not have delivered Israel or performed miracles. God honors good choices that align with truth and salvation.

Christ's Example

Jesus prioritized saving sinners over an earthly reign. When the crowd sought to make Him king, He withdrew. His first coming was to die and save humanity; He will reign in His second coming. Believers are called to preach the gospel and serve humbly, not to seek lordship. "He that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve."

Conclusion

Pastor Kumuyi urged believers to learn from these examples, serve in humility and holiness, and focus on bringing sinners into God's kingdom. Such service brings eternal reward.
