EFCC Orders Apology to UUTH Staff, Launches Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially broken its silence regarding the recent incident at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), issuing a direct message to Professor Eyo Ekpe and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). The anti-graft agency has ordered an official apology to the affected medical staff and promised a thorough investigation into the events of May 12, 2026.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede directed that an apology be extended to Professor Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at UUTH, as well as to all members of the NMA. The directive came after a preliminary review of the incident involving EFCC operatives and hospital staff on Tuesday, May 12.

Olukoyede acknowledged the importance of professionalism in all EFCC operations and expressed regret for the discomfort caused to hospital personnel and the public. The Commission emphasized that the well-being of Nigerians remains central to its mandate.

Full Investigation Ordered

The EFCC confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the encounter. Any officer found culpable will face disciplinary action according to established rules. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and professional conduct within its ranks.

Call for Continued Collaboration

Olukoyede reiterated the EFCC's readiness to strengthen cooperation with medical professionals and other stakeholders to prevent similar incidents in the future. He urged the NMA and other professional bodies to continue supporting the agency's anti-corruption mandate, stressing that collaboration is essential in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
