Veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has officially declared his intention to contest for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives, representing the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The movie star made this disclosure while outlining his motivations for re-entering the political arena, urging Nigerians to move past internet commentary and take active control of the nation's democratic processes.
From Entertainment to Governance
The actor positioned his legislative ambition as a direct step up from his decades-long career of entertaining the nation, appealing directly to the public for their mandate. He stated, "I'm running for the Federal House of Representatives, under the Bwari/AMAC Federal Constituency in Abuja. And we want to make a federal statement. Have I made you happy as Nigerians? For me, yes. If I've made you happy as Nigerians, I want to step into the real thing right now. Let's see how we bring dividends close to you."
Criticism of Political Elite
The Nollywood star did not hold back in criticizing the current political elite, whom he accused of hoarding power and resources at the expense of ordinary citizens. He insisted that the true power belongs to the electorate and called for a collective front to displace career politicians who treat public service as personal property. "We want to stop. Let's block those boys who think they are the ones who have power. They're not the ones who have power. They're not getting anything. If we stand, they will run. So let's stand up, take power, and rearrange our country. We don't deserve to be begging," he noted.
Drawing from International Experience
Drawing from his international travels, the veteran actor compared the administrative failure in Nigeria to the functional, structured systems observable in developed countries, where governance is seamless and accessible to the average individual. He explained, "I travel overseas a lot. And when I look around, all I see is structure. All I see is a systemised, organised system where everything works. So you don't even need to see the president. You don't even need to know your mayor. Your mayor enters the same bus as you. But here, they seize it, put it in their pockets, and then you can't get it unless you play their game. So what I'm saying is, let's get involved in this game now."
Call to Action for Nigerians
Expressing profound disappointment, Ike said that his grievance is directed less at the political class and more at the compliance and inaction of the Nigerian citizens. He argued that politicians have consistently demonstrated a lack of respect for the populace because voters refuse to leverage their collective power effectively. "I'm actually angry. And I'm angry because of you, Nigerians, honestly, not for the politicians. They have shown us that they don't respect us. They've shown us that we're not worth anything to them. And they have a caucus and a code they use against us. We sit back behind the keypads, online, we yell, we cry, we make noise, yet we don't make any impact," he lamented.
"All we do is say, 'Oh, we curse them out, their father, their mother.' Is that what we're going to do forever? Now, why don't you, as a Nigerian, go and pick your PVC? That's all the noise you need to make. Stop making noise. Pick your PVC. If there is a ground slide victory, nobody can change it," Ike added. "We have the right to change the narratives. We have the right to tell Nigeria where it should go on the trajectory. We shouldn't sit back and be saying, 'Ah, it is them I don't know. Who are they?'" he concluded.
Background and Previous Political Attempt
Before joining national politics, Emeka Ike built an iconic career in Nollywood during the late 1990s and 2000s, establishing himself as one of the industry's premier romantic leads and most recognizable faces. His extensive filmography and screen presence earned him a massive, loyal following across the continent. This is not Mr Ike's first shot at politics. In 2018, the veteran actor threw his hat into the ring to contest for the exact same Federal House of Representatives seat. At the time, he ran under the banner of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) to represent the Ideato South constituency in Imo State. He lost that election to Paschal Obi of the Action Alliance (AA).
