Former Presidential Aide Advocates for Southern Candidates in 2027 Election
Laolu Akande, a former presidential aide, has issued a strong call to opposition parties in Nigeria, urging them to unite behind credible southern candidates such as Rotimi Amaechi or Peter Obi to mount a formidable challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. Akande emphasized that a robust opposition is essential for the health and sustainability of Nigeria's democracy, warning that the lingering influence of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar is stifling progress and creating ambivalence within opposition ranks.
Clarity on Zoning and Democratic Imperatives
During a recent interview on Channels TV's Sunrise Daily, Akande stressed that a meaningful opposition challenge is not just desirable but imperative for a sustainable democratic system. He argued that all stakeholders must contribute to enlightening the democratic space to ensure vibrant political competition. Akande highlighted the need for clarity on the zoning of the presidency, noting that it is widely accepted that the office should remain in the South, a reality he believes is settled and should guide opposition strategies.
He condemned the current ambivalence within opposition circles, particularly pointing to what he termed the "shadows of Atiku Abubakar," who is reportedly poised to seek another northern ticket. Akande stated, "What ought to be clear by now, talking about the opposition, I mean the ADC, is that the presidency is going to stay in the South. And that is one of the ambivalences that is affecting the true emergence of a serious opposition." He added that the question of a national presidency has become a national concern, and it is unwise for anyone to attempt to undercut this consensus.
Rallying Behind Experienced Southern Figures
Akande urged opposition parties, including rivals of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to rally behind experienced southern figures with proven track records. He specifically praised Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State, for his credentials and leadership qualities, suggesting that Amaechi represents a viable candidate who can galvanize support across the country. Similarly, he mentioned Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, as another credible option who has demonstrated capability and garnered significant public interest in previous elections.
By focusing on such candidates, Akande believes the opposition can present a united front and offer a serious alternative to President Tinubu, thereby strengthening democratic processes and ensuring that voters have meaningful choices. He concluded that without this strategic alignment, the opposition risks remaining fragmented and ineffective, ultimately undermining Nigeria's democratic development.
