The National Forum of Former Legislators has strongly rejected demands for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step down from office following recent security incidents in Kebbi and Kwara states that shocked the nation.
Forum Condemns Resignation Calls as Reckless
In an official statement released on November 21, 2025, the Forum's National Coordinator, Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe, characterized the resignation demand from a group calling itself "Ex-Legislators" as irresponsible and undemocratic. He emphasized that such inflammatory statements serve only to distract from ongoing efforts to tackle Nigeria's security challenges.
The Forum described the resignation call as a needless diversion that doesn't represent the position of responsible former lawmakers who remain dedicated to Nigeria's constitutional stability and progress.
"As patriotic Nigerians and former representatives of the people, we condemn every premature, partisan, and destabilizing statement that seeks to politicize national tragedies," the statement declared. "This is a time for unity, not opportunism."
Tinubu's Security Response Commended
While expressing deep concern about the kidnapping of schoolchildren in Kebbi State and the deadly assault on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State, the Forum praised President Tinubu's handling of the crisis situations.
The group specifically highlighted the President's decision to postpone his scheduled trips to the G20 and AU-EU Summits as demonstrating "a deep sense of duty and compassion for affected families." This move allowed Tinubu to receive comprehensive security briefings and coordinate a swift national response.
The Forum also applauded Tinubu's directive for rapid deployment of additional military and police personnel to Eruku and other affected regions. They noted his instruction to security agencies to utilize all available resources to rescue the 24 abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi as particularly significant.
Solidarity with Victims and Security Forces
Expressing solidarity with victims and their families, the former legislators urged security agencies to maintain both professionalism and urgency in their operations until the kidnapped girls are safely rescued and the perpetrators face justice.
The Forum reaffirmed its support for President Tinubu while calling on all stakeholders—including governments at all levels, community leaders, security agencies, and civil society organizations—to collaborate in strengthening national security measures.
President Tinubu had earlier expressed his personal distress about both the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba alongside other soldiers in Borno State. In a post on X, the President stated that these incidents had left him depressed and offered prayers for the affected families.
"As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am depressed with the tragic death of our soldiers and officers on active duty. May God comfort the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes," Tinubu wrote.
