Fani-Kayode Slams Peter Obi for Praising Abacha, Criticizing NADECO
Fani-Kayode Criticizes Obi Over Abacha, NADECO Remarks

Fani-Kayode Condemns Peter Obi's Comments on Abacha and NADECO

Femi Fani-Kayode, Nigeria's Ambassador-designate to Germany, has strongly criticized former presidential candidate Peter Obi for his recent statements praising the late Military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, and denigrating the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). In a sharp rebuke, Fani-Kayode accused Obi of attempting to revise history and disrespect the sacrifices made by democracy activists.

Obi's Controversial Statement on Abacha

Peter Obi had posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, lauding General Sani Abacha as "seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights" compared to NADECO activists. He added, "Power indeed reveals character," implying that Abacha's regime was unfairly maligned. This statement sparked immediate backlash from political figures and veterans of the pro-democracy movement.

Fani-Kayode's Fiery Response

In his reaction, Fani-Kayode described Obi's remarks as an insult to the leaders and members of NADECO who fought against military rule. He emphasized that these activists endured immense suffering, including imprisonment, exile, torture, and death, to secure democracy for Nigeria. Fani-Kayode pointed out that Obi worked for Abacha's administration during this period, while NADECO members resisted oppression.

He further criticized Obi's association with the defunct Association of Destructive C*nts (ADC), noting its National Chairman, Brigadier General David Mark (retired), once threatened to shoot Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 election. Fani-Kayode argued that such figures contributed to the annulment of Abiola's election and the subsequent chaos in Nigeria.

Historical Context and Accusations

Fani-Kayode highlighted that many of Obi's supporters, known as the Obidient movement, were not born during the Abacha era and are unaware of Obi's role. He accused Obi and his party members of being complicit in brutal military regimes, lacking the courage to resist tyranny. The ambassador-designate urged Obi to refrain from discussing NADECO and to appreciate the democracy that others fought and died for between 1992 and 1999.

He also expressed disappointment with NADECO veterans like Dele Momodu and Rauf Aregbesola for downplaying past sacrifices, citing Aregbesola's association with David Mark as particularly troubling. Fani-Kayode contrasted this with Atiku Abubakar, who opposed Abacha, while Obi supported him.

Call to Remember the Past

Fani-Kayode concluded by stressing the importance of remembering Nigeria's dark history, marked by violence and near-civil war. He vowed to educate younger generations about the sacrifices made and to honor those who lost their lives in the struggle for democracy. His message serves as a reminder not to trivialize the efforts of past heroes in the face of current political rhetoric.
