Federal Government Expands NYSC Mobilisation with 50,000 Additional Slots

The Nigerian federal government has taken a significant step to address the growing number of graduates awaiting deployment by approving 50,000 extra slots for the 2026 National Youth Service Corps mobilisation. This decision aims to reduce the backlog of prospective corps members seeking to participate in the mandatory national service programme.

Increased Mobilisation Capacity and Safety Measures

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Director General of NYSC, disclosed this development during the inauguration of a remodelled clinic at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja. He stated that the organisation plans to mobilise approximately 450,000 graduates in 2026. Nafiu emphasised that safety remains a top priority, with efforts to avoid deploying corps members to high-risk areas, ensuring their protection as a responsibility to parents.

Welfare Enhancements for Corps Members

In addition to the slot expansion, the federal government has outlined plans to improve the welfare of corps members in future budget cycles. Provisions have been made in the 2027 budget to enhance the quality of kits issued to participants. Furthermore, feeding arrangements and transportation allowances are set to receive attention, aiming to boost the overall experience and support for those serving.

Infrastructure and Administrative Upgrades

The renovation of the headquarters clinic is part of a broader initiative to improve staff welfare and operational efficiency within NYSC. Nafiu also reviewed several administrative achievements from the past year, including the completion of the 2025 staff promotion exercise, payment of retirement benefits, and the introduction of peculiar allowances for employees. These steps are designed to support career development and raise morale among personnel.

Partnerships and Programme Strengthening

To further bolster the scheme, NYSC has engaged in partnerships to enhance its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme. Collaborations with the Enterprise Development Centre of Pan Atlantic University aim to digitise the SAED platform. Additionally, the scheme has worked with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria to strengthen support for corps members nationwide.

Ministerial Support and Advisory

Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, commissioned the remodelled clinic and reaffirmed the government's commitment to transforming and reforming NYSC. He advised corps members to prioritise safety by avoiding night travel and seeking refuge in military barracks, police stations, or NYSC offices when necessary.

State-Level Funding Initiatives

In a related development, the Adamawa State Executive Council has approved N11.4 billion for key projects in education, health, water, and power sectors. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, James Iliya, highlighted that this funding aligns with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri's vision to improve social infrastructure and living standards across the state.
