FG Declares May 27-28, 2026 Public Holidays for Eid Al Adha

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate this year's Eid Al Adha, also known as Eid al-Kabir.

Announcement by Interior Minister

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on behalf of the federal government on Monday, May 25, 2026. The declaration was conveyed through a statement issued by the ministry's permanent secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and abroad on the occasion. He called on followers of Islam to continue embracing the spirit of sacrifice and faith exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim. He also urged them to use the period to pray for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

Renewed Hope Agenda

The minister assured Nigerians that the people-oriented reforms and initiatives under the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu's administration are aimed at restoring Nigeria on the path of progress. The statement concluded with a wish for a happy Eid Al Adha celebration and a call for all Nigerians to support the administration's efforts to restore the country's glory.

Significance of Eid Al Adha

Eid Al Adha is a major Muslim festival marking the end of the pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The holiday begins with Arafat Day on Dhu Al Hijjah 9 and continues through Dhu Al Hijjah 10, 11, and 12. According to Muslim tradition, Prophet Muhammad instituted the celebration.

Typically, Muslims dress in new clothes and attend special congregational Eid prayers at mosques or open grounds on the morning of Eid Al Adha. The prayers are followed by the sacrifice of an animal, visits to family and friends, and sharing food with loved ones and the needy in honor of Prophet Ibrahim's obedience to God.

Global Observance

Muslims in several countries will observe Eid Al Adha 2026 on Wednesday, May 27. In the United Arab Emirates, Eid Al Adha was projected for May 27 based on the Dhu Al Hijjah crescent, with dates reliant on final moonsighting. Astronomical calculations provided expected dates, but official confirmation depended on the sighting of the new crescent moon.

This declaration follows the pattern of previous years, where the federal government announces public holidays to allow Muslims to celebrate the festival. The holidays are expected to be observed nationwide.
