The first batch of Kano State pilgrims has arrived at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, in the early hours of Saturday for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. The group, consisting of 588 passengers from four local government areas, departed from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport aboard NGL 3025 Max Air at exactly 00:48 hours.
Inaugural Flight Marks Start of Airlift
The inaugural flight, which was rescheduled, signals the commencement of the airlift of 3,620 contingents from Kano, less than 11 days before the start of Hajj rituals in the holy city of Makkah. The departure followed a farewell event at the airport on Friday night.
Governor's Farewell and Caution
Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was present at the airport to bid farewell to the pilgrims, urged them to be worthy ambassadors of Kano and Nigeria while in Saudi Arabia. He specifically cautioned the intending pilgrims against any form of unruly behavior that could tarnish their image and that of the country. "We believe our pilgrims are wonderful people and will not engage in any shameful act," the Governor stated.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the government has provided adequate welfare packages, including accommodation, feeding, and medical care, to ensure pilgrims remain in good health throughout the spiritual exercise. According to him, "Our government has done all that is supposed to be done for the pilgrims. My Deputy Governor, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, was with you and briefed you on my behalf. We have done a lot for you, especially regarding healthcare."
Appointment of Amirul Hajj
The Governor revealed that his administration has appointed the Emir of Gaya, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, a well-respected traditional ruler, as the Amirul Hajj for this year's pilgrimage, with the Emir of Karaye, Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad Maharaz, as his deputy.
Director General's Commendation
Earlier, the Director General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim Matawalle, commended the government for its support in ensuring a smooth Hajj exercise. He informed the Governor that all 560 pilgrims on the first flight had been supplied with soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, as these are the first items they will need upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.
